Things To Do and See Within One Hour’s Drive of Caloundra

Once you’ve had your fill of sun-drenched beaches and Sunshine Coast attractions, fill up your tank and hit the road to some stunning places around the region. Here is our list of suggestions for things to do and see within one hour’s drive of Caloundra:

Buderim

Distance: 22 kms or 27 minutes drive.
Buderim is renowned for its leafy streets, lined with poinciana trees and flowering shrubs. Major natural attractions are the Buderim Forest Waterfall Walk, Buderim Falls and Foote Sanctuary. Or for history buffs there is a walking trail to showcase the highlights of Buderim history, available from Buderim Information Centre at the Old Post Office.

Maleny & Montville

Distance: 34 kms or 35 minutes drive.
The beautiful Sunshine Coast Hinterland and the charming towns of Maleny and Montville are a comfortable driving distance from Caloundra. With an average elevation of 450m, the cooler temperatures in the hinterland offer a cool change from the coast.

Maleny, Montville and surrounding areas, are mainly lush green farmlands and are rich with skilled artisans. The arts and crafts in both villages are an art lover’s delight.

Maleny has an abundance of restaurants, cafes and dining options available, both in the town and on its outskirts. But there is also the Maleny Dairies which is open to visitors on weekends or The Maleny Cheese Factory which is a popular place to buy all sorts of different cheeses.

Montville is Maleny’s sister town, and the more shopping orientated of the two, with its main street lined with all sorts of different shops. Its location on the range overlooking the Sunshine Coast, makes it a popular place to stop and take photos or have a picnic lunch.

Glass House Mountains

Distance: 43 kms or 35 minutes drive.
From Caloundra the Glass House Mountain circuit drive is accessible from the Bruce Highway. When you approach the highway you’ll see a turn off for Tourist Drive 24 which will take you all along Steve Irwin Way past Australia Zoo. Simply follow this road until it re-joins the Bruce Highway further south.

The road takes you through strawberry farms, pineapple farms, macadamia nut farms and a wide variety of other horticulture and agriculture operations. For the final stretch of the drive the road runs through the Glass House Mountains National Park where you’ll enjoy the distinctive scenery dotted with volcanic plugs rising out of the trees.

There are plenty of sealed and unsealed roads throughout the park that will take you to lookouts and walking tracks.

Noosa Heads

Distance: 55 kms or 55 minutes drive.
Noosa Heads boasts beautiful beaches, a pristine river, lush hinterland and national parks, together with a chic lifestyle. The must do and see things in Noosa Heads are:

You can hike to the summits of Mt Cooroora or Mt Tinbeerwah; go old school at the movies with a silent film at the heritage-listed Majestic Theatre in Pomona; visit the Cooroy Butter Factory Community Arts Centre or nearby Noosa Botanic Gardens; and picnic alongside the beautiful Mary River that flows through the small town of Kenilworth.
